에이엠씨랩(AMC Lab)은 차세대 한국미술을 이끌어갈 유망한 젊은 작가인 오선영과 정세인을 소개하는 <image.text>전을 개최한다. 두 작가는 여러 매체를 통해 넘쳐나는 정보 속에서 자신의 의도에 맞는 이미지와 텍스트를 선별하고 본인의 고유한 작업으로 풀어낸다. 오선영과 정세인의 작품은 매우 다른 듯 보이지만 작가들이 자신들의 관심사를 바탕으로 치밀한 계획에 따라 이미지와 텍스트 사이에서 작품을 만드는 접점을 가진다. 그리고 그 작품들은 매우 감각적으로 우리 앞에 펼쳐진다. 고전적인 환상문학을 자신만의 이미지로 선보이는 오선영과 소설, 영화, 뉴스 등 대중문화를 바탕으로 위트있는 작품을 선보이는 정세인의 이인전은 범람하는 이미지와 정보의 홍수 속에서도 길을 잃지 않고, 도리어 이를 바탕으로 세련되고 유연한 방식으로 자신만의 독창적인 작품세계를 구축해 나가는 젊은 작가들의 역량을 보여준다.

 

오선영(b.1987)은 신화, 전설, 환상동화 속에서 모티브들을 뽑고 잡지, 뉴스 등에서 인상적으로 본 이미지들을 결합해서 몽환적인 작품을 완성시킨다. 이번 전시에서 오선영은 회화작품과 도자기작품을 함께 선보인다. 마치 누군가의 꿈속에 초대된 것 같은 오선영의 작품은 신화, 전설, 환상동화 속에서 시작하기 때문에 어디선가 봄직한 이미지로 다가온다. 그러나 가만히 들여다보면 각각의 이미지들이 서로 다른 회화의 언어가 사용되어, 새롭게 완성된 모습을 보인다. 즉, 오선영의 작품은 자신만의 스토리텔링을 하고 있는 것이다. 작가의 회화작품은 때로는 미완성처럼 보이기도 하는데 이것은 작가가 꼼꼼한 사전 스케치를 통해 치밀하게 의도한 것이다. 평면회화를 기반으로 작업 활동을 펼치는 오선영은 도자기를 또 다른 캔버스로 사용하여 작품을 확장시킨다. 판도라 상자, 숲, 저택, 별 등 환상동화에서 자주 등장하는 고전적인 단어들은 작가가 선택하는 물감과 붓질, 그리고 구도 등 각기 다른 회화적 언어를 통해서 새롭게 펼쳐진다.

오선영은 성균관 대학교에서 서양화를 전공하였고 첼시 컬리지 오브 아트에서 순수미술로 석사학위를 받았다. OCI미술관(2018)과 갤러리 그리다(2017)에서 개인전을 진행하였고, 금산갤러리, 갤러리 그리다, Candid Arts (영국, 런던) 등에서 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. OCI 미술관의 ‘2018 OCI Young Creatives’에 선정되었다.

 

정세인(b.1985)은 회화, 오브제, 사진, 텍스트, 영상 설치 등 다양한 매체를 사용해 작업을 전개하고 있으며, 이번 전시에서는 텍스트를 다루는 작업을 주로 선보인다. 1960년대 미국의 팝아티스트들의 작품이미지를 차용한 회화, 스프레이로 타공판 위에 글자를 뿌리고 바닥에 다른 이미지나 텍스트를 겹치는 작업, 텍스트 작업을 한 후 남은 재료를 콜라주한 드로잉 신작을 공개한다. 미국의 팝아티스트 웨인 티보나 제임스 로젠퀴스트의 작품을 차용한 회화는 작가의 텍스트가 더해져 개인적이고 친근해진다. 텍스트 작업에서 body/soul, mystery/history 등 짝지어진 단어는 각 단어가 의미하는 뜻보다는 두 단어의 관계를 생각하게 만든다. 텍스트 작업 후 남은 재료로 콜라주한 드로잉은 우발적이며 즉흥적으로 만들어지며, 텍스트 작업과는 별개의 완전히 새로운 작품으로 태어난다. 이미지와 텍스트를 통한 유희와 이를 통해 나타나는 반전, 위트와 블랙유머는 정세인의 작품 기저에 굳건히 자리잡고 있다.

정세인은 이화여자대학교 조형예술학부에서 서앙화를 전공하고 한국예술종합학교 미술원 조형예술과 전문사를 졸업했다. 메이크샵 아트스페이스에서의 개인전 <Nobody/No Body in Heaven> (2014)을 포함해 총4회의 개인전을 진행했으며, 스페이스 K, 자하미술관, 아트스페이스 휴, 프라판트 갤러리(독일, 함부르크) 등에서 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. 프랑스 파리 시테 레지던시(2017), 메이크샵아트스페이스(2013-2014) 등의 레지던시에 참여하였다.

AMC Lab presents image.text by two promising Korean artists, Sane JUNG and Sunyoung OH. JUNG and OH both select images and texts from a flood of images and information across various media. The collected information is translated and transformed into each artist's unique art practices. At first glance, Sane JUNG and Sunyoung OH seem to employ markedly different art practices. However, they both create work through comprehensive planning based on in-depth research into their source images and texts. Often referring to fantasy literature, OH creates dreamlike images, while JUNG makes witty works using images and texts from novels, movies and the news media. This two-person exhibition will showcase these young artists' ability to build a unique style in a sophisticated and flexible way in the face of a contemporary influx of information.

 

Sunyoung OH (b. 1987) takes motifs from myth, legend, and fantasy literature and images found in magazines and mainstream news and combines them to create new images. The exhibition presents OH’s dreamlike paintings and ceramic works. Her paintings feel familiar because they are rooted in myth, legend, and fantasy, and we feel we may have encountered their landscapes before. However, each of her paintings tells its own unique story. Her paintings have an unfinished quality to them but are the result of multiple preliminary sketches. OH takes her exploration of painting deeper by also using ceramics as a medium. Words and phrases such as "Pandora's box", "forest", "mansions", and "stars" are often found in fantasy literature, and OH transforms such words into images with a carefully curated language of composition, color, and brushstroke.

 

OH received her BFA from Sungkyunkwan University, Korea, and her MA in fine art from the Chelsea College of Arts, UK. She has held solo shows at OCI Museum of Art (2018) and Gallery Grida (2017). She has participated in group shows at Keumsan Gallery, Gallery Grida, and Candid Arts (London, UK), among others. The OCI Museum of Art selected her as one of the 2018 OCI Young Creatives.

 

Sane JUNG (b. 1985) works with painting, photography, text, and installation. In this exhibition, she focuses on text and shows a new series of paintings, whose images are appropriated from 1960s American pop art; spray paintings on perforated aluminum panels, with several layers of image or text added to the bottom; and drawings composed of materials left over from her spray paintings. JUNG appropriates images from American pop artists Wayne Thiebaud and James Rosenquist, and adds texts to her paintings, lending a personal, friendly touch to the works. In her spray paintings, paired words such as "body/soul" and "mystery/history" prompt us to think about the relationship between words rather than to focus on the meaning of a word in isolation. Drawings composed of leftover materials from her spray paintings depend on chance and improvisation and are complete, independent works. JUNG's works are a play between image and text, and wit and black humor are inherent throughout her work.

 

JUNG obtained her BFA from Ewha Woman’s University, Korea, and MFA from Korea National University of Arts, Korea. She has had solo shows four times including Nobody/No Body in Heaven (2014) at Makeshop Art Space. She has participated in group shows at Space K, Zaha Museum, Art Space Hue, and Frappant e.V. (Hamburg, Germany), among others. She has participated in several artist-in-residence programs including Cité des Arts Residency in France (2017) and Makeshop Art Space (2013 – 2014).
